*** Competition Cancelled ***
It is with great regret that the Organising Committee has today had to take the decision to cancel the regatta on the grounds of potential safety and fairness of competition. We know that this will be very disappointing to you but being able to provide fair racing is fundamental.
A full refund will be made in due course.
The regatta has been months in the planning as has the management of the lake and with our usual aquatic contractors hitting the weed harvesting hard using much additional plant & machinery. However the recent weather has not been on our side. Since commencing the harvesting with twice the number of machines we have seen further weed growth on a day-by-day basis, although we believe that the weed would have been defeated by close of play on Friday. However, today we believe there is evidence of a significant algal bloom forming in some parts of the lake which would make some of the lanes unfair and bring some safety concerns into play. With the soaring temperatures this bloom is likely grow rapidly.
With the high temperatures and no rainfall for a considerable time we have also seen the lake water level at its lowest ever (at least 150mm lower than its designed minimum depth) meaning even less water to absorb the sunlight & heat, thus rapidly adding to the growth rate of weed and algae.
This decision has not been taken lightly but on balance it was thought best to cancel sooner and especially before any trailers had departed for Peterborough.
The Organising Committee apologises for the current situation but have the best interests for our competitors safety & fairness at the forefront of our minds.
Our popular Summer Regatta is returning to the water on 13 & 14 August 2022.
