Peterborough’s junior rowers delivered a weekend of grit and determination at the prestigious National Schools Regatta, bringing home a string of impressive top-20 finishes despite grueling conditions.
Competing over a punishing 2km course in extreme heat, the local athletes went head-to-head with the country’s elite across two days of intense racing.
Senior Crews lead the charge
The star performance in the senior ranks came from the WJ18 Championship Coxless Quad. The crew of Jasmin Chesher, Bea Gregory, Emma Dennis and Evelina Xanthopoulou endured a brutal schedule of brutal schedule of four 2km races over the weekend. Navigating a massive field of 30 boats, they stormed to a brilliant second-place finish in the B Final, ranking them 10th overall in the UK.
In the matching J18 Quad event, the boys’ crew of Billy Hynes, Matt Baker, Ewan Stanley and Lewis Barber fought through the same punishing multi-race schedule, securing a commendable sixth place in the C Final out of 28 competing crews.
In the individual events, Florence Lillywhite took on the ultimate test of endurance in the WJ18 Championship Single Sculls. Taking to the water alone over the 2km distance for her first-ever National Schools Regatta, she rowed an exceptional final to cross the line in a fantastic fourth place.

Reflecting on the team’s achievements, Coach Calver said ‘it was an extremely successful weekend in extremely tough conditions, with strong performance from all the athletes. We look forward to seeing them in action again at home and at the British rowing junior championships in July. We wish them well with their remaining A levels and GCSEs’
