Peterborough City Rowing Club capitalized on home advantage this weekend, securing five victories at the annual Peterborough Spring Regatta.

The two-day event saw over 800 crews and over 1,700 athletes compete across 117 separate events.

Saturday Success

The club opened its account on Saturday with two victories:

  • Open 4x- Band 1: The crew of Tom Calver, Mike King, James Plum, and Karl Stapleton took the win after a strong performance in the coxless quad band 1
  • Open 1x Band 1: Toby Ray secured a solo victory in a highly competitive singles field.

Open 2x Band 1: Tom Calver and James Plumb delivered a hard-fought performance to challenge the leaders in a highly competitive double sculls final.

Sunday Masters Wins

The club’s momentum continued into Sunday, with the Masters squad delivering three further wins and an inspiring milestone in adaptive rowing.

  • Open Masters B 1x (Race 119): Duncan Graham won his singles event to start Sunday’s medal tally.
  • Women’s Master C 2x (Race 128): Linda Dennis and Kate Read combined to take first place in the double sculls.
  • Open Masters C 2- (Race 145): Will Kerry and Ro Knighton secured the final local win of the weekend in the coxless pair.

Masters Men D 8+: The crew of Alastair Brown, David Elks, Iain Cameron, Damian Roberts, Andrew Manning, Barry McCann, Ruairi Moore, and Kenny Low, coxed by John Canton, finished a credible second in the mixed Mens Masters B/D final. In doing so, they clocked a time of 3:32.7, setting their fastest time on the Peterborough course.

The club also fielded a Men’s Masters F 4x, featuring visually impaired rowers Andrew McMullon at stroke and Steve Ackerman at the two-seat. Having joined the club in 2024 through the ‘Row the Rhythm’ initiative, McMullon’s transition to racing highlights the club’s growing commitment to competitive adaptive rowing

Peterborough’s Junior squad also delivered some strong performances over the weekend

  • Bea Gregory enjoyed a strong weekend dominating her own age group to win the WJ15 1x title, before stepping up on Sunday to secure a hard-fought, close second-place finish in the senior Womens 1x Band 1 category.
  • Gregory also joined forces with Millie Yule, Millie Williams, and Hannah Fitzjohn to secure another win in the W16 4x
  • The J16 2x duo of George Dennis and Matas Lebed completely dominated the field, powering down the course to win their event by a convincing margin of over 7 seconds.
